How a Ductless Heating and Cooling System Works

Oct 16, 2023

Heating and cooling is one of the most important systems in your home. Deciding which type of system you need is an important choice. More and more homeowners are choosing ductless heating and cooling systems for the advantages they provide. Keep reading to learn just how these systems work and why they are so beneficial.

How Ductless Systems Work

A ductless heating and cooling system, also sometimes called a mini-split, is a type of HVAC system that uses individual wall-mounted blowers. The individual units are connected by a line set to a central outdoor condensing unit. The refrigerant is circulated through the line connected to one or more indoor air handlers, which collect and circulate the cooled or heated air into the room. The air is then returned to the outdoor condensing unit, creating a transference of heat from indoors to outdoors, helping to keep your home at ideal temperatures.

The big advantage of this system is that it provides temperature control for one room or area at a time. This can work well for houses that have additions like sun rooms or garages that need heating and air. You may also have second or third stories that don't need as much heating as other parts of the house. This could be the perfect fit!

Ductless System Options

There are a few different options when it comes to ductless systems. You can choose a ductless air conditioner, ductless heat pump, or ductless zoning system, which allows you to connect several rooms together. All of these options are great for energy efficiency. There's no sense in spending money heating or cooling rooms that don't need it! Go for the sensible option by investing in ductless alternatives.

Ductless System Installation

It’s not a good idea to attempt this type of installation yourself. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the ductless mini-split hook-up between the outdoor and indoor units usually requires only a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit. This can seem like an easy task, but there are other factors involved in the installation that will need the assistance of someone with years of experience. If you are interested in ductless heating and cooling, you will want the expertise of a certified HVAC technician.

After learning about the benefits offered by ductless heating and cooling, you may be ready to get started with this system. If you want to connect with knowledgeable HVAC technicians, contact NorthStar Services today. We can get you started with a free estimate!
